RACE RECAP
written by: Ralph Mason
The Daytona International Speedway, known to many of us as the home of NASCAR. However, inside its high banks lies a road-course This is the home of the Daytona 24 hours, an endurance race second only to the Le Mans 24 hours. On the 9th of April 2013, the NR2003 community took to this course for the running of a two hour race to celebrate two years of the NNSCRA. The drivers, veterans of stock car racing not just from the United States, but from as far afield as England, France and Japan. The cars chosen were the the gods of 80's and early 90's motor racing, some of the simply awe-inspiring Group C cars, the Sauber Mercedes, the Toyota 88C-V, the Jaguar XJR-9 and the Mazda 787B, which can be summed up in numbers alone. Over 1000BHP, 240MPH and almost no grip or down-force Their drivers required balls of pure titanium...not that that was an issue considering the drivers partaking in this race were highly experienced and battle hardened Considering throwing a "Curve ball"? Get in line! There were already a tone of things the drivers were going to have to get used to, the cars, the track, not doing a Johnny Herbert, the fact the flagman looked suspiciously like Mr. Sato...
The coverage, live on NNSCRA 2 in America and the BSCTV in England, was lead by the Red Bull-obsessed Anthony McCrury and that guy who goes on about fries all the time, Ralph Mason. Proceedings kicked off with a special introduction including a tribute and recap of the NNSCRA complete with that boomy voice thing that is an insta-win in American media, a track breakdown to the sound of pounding techno and technical breakdown of the Group C cars, courtesy of Ralph.
Once the drivers and fans were woken up after the lecture, the stating grid was ran through, this time with a bit of glam metal. Julian Kenablez Jr. in the 09 Pontiac-Toyota set the pole time of 1:29.67. Skyla Johnson would start the car in the first stint.
Skyla Johnson and Englishman Marcus Rustcrute in a Jaguar lead the field to the start. In the first turn Skyla cleared and pulled away from Marcus as the field began to sort itself out to mostly single file. The turbo cars were congregating towards the front of the field and the naturally aspirated Jaguars and Mazdas (except Rustrute) were dropping towards the mid and back of the field In the early laps the lone supercharged Dodge-Mazda of the Rodgers gang, with Jake Rogers at the wheel, began to move towards the front of the field Early on in the run, there were a few dodgy moments in the hairpin turn 5 where cars would run two wheels off the track and kick up a large amount of dirt and gravel. Also Ralph kept going on about the "boost" which made everyone in England very hungry and everyone in America confused as to if that was some kind of innuendo... 3 minuets in and Justin Williams in the Sauber Mercedes C9 number 87 had a spin at turn 6, but didn't hit anything and brought out a local area caution in the second sector. The 4 minuet mark and the Porsche-Toyota number 29 driven by Joque Gilland begins to splutter and is the first victim of an engine issue and falls back. James Silverfox and other Toyota chassis cars dropped back to the extreme rear of the field It was suspected they were involved in the 87's accident. The 63 of Paige Gonzalez pits at about 6 minuets in. She returns to the racetrack but in the last position. About 10 minutes in and Jake Rogers has a scary moment at turn 5's hairpin and almost gets spun by Max Skinner in the 85 Chevrolet-Jaguar. Also a battle for 7th between Kyle Sosnoski in the 50 Pontiac-Toyota and John Cittadino in the 75 Ford-Toyota has continued to rage since the start. As the first commercial break looms, Skyla Johnson might be about to face a significant challenge from one Marcus Rustcrute...
Back from commercial with 1 hour and 48 minuets to go and Anthony spends some quality time plugging Red Bull. Then pit reporter man (who came over from the BSCTV channel to help on the broadcast) informed the viewer of the Mazda problems. The highest running Mazda at this point is the Judd powered car number 18 driven by Chris Kyle in 12th place. 15 mins in and Ralph makes a rather confusing metaphor about boxes and Dennis King's number 47 Porsche-Toyota leaves pit road a lap down after engine issues. The guys at Porsche are getting nervous. Then when the clock struck 17 minuets in, the 21 Jaguar of veteran road racer and 24hours of Spa winner Martin Shorts makes contact with the Red Bull Porsche-Toyota. The number 8 Ford-Toyota of Richard Johnson gets caught up and smacks the pitwall and spins into the middle of the racetrack. With nowhere to go, Mary Cole in the 24 Sauber Mercedes and the 19 of Rory Ogle pile in. One of the Mazdas crashes into Richard as he attempted to right himself. Barney Ward in the Number 6 Jaguar hits the spinning Mazda and takes serious damage. Also involved is Justin Willams in the 87 Sauber. In the midst of this, Zach Flickinger in the number 2 Sauber Mercedes and Seth Cole in the Lexus-Sauber thread there way through using magic. Mary Cole and Barny Ward took significant damage and are forced to the garage Full course caution comes out. Pit stops took place and Eric Burton of the 02 car took the liberty of stopping by the booth and was assaulted by some questions which resulted in him running to the hills. He was fetched later for the driver change. Brandon Bayne in the 39 Porsche-Toyota was in the lead, he stayed out under caution but he quickly followed the pace car into the pits and gave the lead to Paige Gongales in the 63 Sauber Mercedes..so the commentators think... followed by the 29 of Joque Gilland. In the first corner Skyla Johnson in the 09, who was 3rd in line, attempted to pass Gilland but she was unable to get the drive off the corner and Gilland got away, followed swiftly by Marcus Rustcrute in the 99 Jaguar. Rustcrute quickly executed a pass on Gilland to put him in "second" place as Pagie Gonzalez tuned the turbos up to full whack and pulled away, thanks to the extra horsepower. Soon the commentators realise their mistake and Marcus Rustcrute is cleared as the leader and Pagie Gonzalez is in fact the last car on the lead lap. That didn't stop her using all the boost she could to pull away. Suddenly, things got nasty, about 8 cars collided on the way into the 3rd turn. Rosco DiMarco in the 07, Treck Tauger in the 30 and Kilson Arconian in the 59, all Toyotas are involved and Frank Block in the 41 Mazda goes off-track a bit. There is no caution, but it still adds to Toyota's horrible day. Adam Flickinger in the 4 Jaguar is believed to be a crucial part of the accident, despite not getting much damage. Jacob Lawler, Dennis King and James Silverfox, more Toyotas, are on pit road for long stops. Meanwhile, Paige Gonzalez's Sauber continues to pull away from the 99 Jaguar of Marcus Rustcrute
About half an hour in and Dillon Young is told off for corner cutting and Skyla Johnson faces a fight for second against Luke Walker's number 7 Sauber Mecedes. Finaly, Paige Gonzalez let up on the boost enough for Marcus Rustcute to get ahead. It also seemed the turbo cars were starting to go easy on the boost, meaning the Jaguars and Mazdas began to catch up. About 32 minuets in and the Mad Coyote Racing teammates of Wolfgang Mason and Martin Short annoy Ralph in the booth by almost crashing into each other and Ralph attempts to sing Iron Maiden's "Two Minuets to Midnight" and deafens the "Boothrats" who give the chaps information on the race. Undefaned, Marcus Rustcrute pulls ever further away from Skyla Johnson. Then a full course caution is issued. Zack Flickinger is on pitroad but there is no damage to his Sauber Mercedes. It is then revealed. The caution is out for...a toy bus...in the bus-stop chicane.
Coming back for the restart, the 87, the 24, the 19 and the 6 are all out of the race with 20 minuets left in the first segment. At the start, Paige Gonzalez got a terrible start which held up the field allowing Marcus Rustcrute to drive away. 43 minuets in and Anthony is informed by the "Boothrats" that he isn't plugging Red Bull enough so he decides to drop a few pointers in before doing a "big corporate suck-up", but suddenly pitstops intervene and the whole talk about corporate sponsorship goes out the window. A little contact takes place between Jamie Emerson's 58 Porsche-Toyota and Jack Richards' Toyota 88C-V and also the Mad Coyote Racing teammates tangle, causing Ralph to have a panic. With 15 minuets left, Anthony can finally make all his corporate money plugging Red Bull as they go to commercial with perhaps the weirdest advertisement in the history of mankind.
Back from commercial in time for a recap and for Ralph to have a bag of crisps with only 12 minuets to go. Marcus Rustcrute is first, Skyla Johnson is second and Luke Walker is third at this point. and Jake Rogers in the very fast Dodge-Mazda number 91 moves into 4th. Then dissaster, Anthony mishears the "Boothrats" talking about one of the very attractive grid girls and thinks they say the Jaguars have DRS, which causes a little confusion but the chaps handle it very professionally With 8 minuets left in the first hour, Mazda hasn't been doing so great, the only two of there cars that have done well are Jake Rogers in the Dodge powered 91 and Chris Kyle in the Judd powered 18. Dillon Young in 4th has lost a bit of pace, perhaps saving some fuel for his co-driver, Sam. With 5 minuets to go, the chaps take there last commercial break and it starts to look like Marcus Rustcrute is going to have everything go his way...
They return with 3 minuets on the clock, that's about 3 laps. Anthony then mentions that Marcus could end up running off the race track and loosing the race in the late stages if he isn't careful but it seems unlikely... Ralph adds that they shouldn't "bin it" just before the hour mark... Tension is setting in... Skyla makes a few ditch attempts to pass the Rustcrute car, but the Jaguar is too strong. It seems the race is Marcus' to loose/ Ralph tortures some more "Boothrats" as Anthony mentions the impending 2 minuets to go mark. Marcus puts the lapped 28 Porsche-Toyota of Joque Gilland between himself and Skyla Johnson's car, allowing the 99 Jaguar to pull futher away.
With just 12 seconds to go, Marcus Rustcrute starts his final lap. A lap that would stick in the minds of all the spectators for many years... Going down into the fourth turn
"Anything can happen in this final lap, they still got to race it back to the line"
Silence.
Turn 5.
"Wow! HE'S IN THE DIRT!!! MARCUS RUSTCRUTE! HE SPUN IT!! RUSTCRUTE!!!"
Marcus Rustcrute thew it all away.
And like a beast waiting for its kill... Luke Walker?! Luke Walker got past Skyla Johnson in all the confusion.
Off of turn 4, Luke Walker completes the first hour in first place. Rustcrute? 14th place.
Then the 80's tatty jingle kicks in and its time for...
